February 2024 Portrait of the Month — Pinchas Schumacher

Pinchas Schumacher

February’s Portrait of the Month features this beautiful and emotional portrait of Pinchas Schumacher. It was created by student Emi R. at a workshop at Calkins Road Middle School conducted by art teacher Stephanie Warchol. Mrs. Warchol has been using this workshop in her classroom for the last several years and we are always impressed with the moving work her young students create. You can read more about the workshops she has conducted here.

Pinchas Schumacher was grandfather to Holocaust survivor Estera Ajzen. She lived to tell his story and almost a century later, students around the world draw his portrait and are moved by their connection to him. They reflected on their experience:

“Looking into the eyes of this man is knowing his story, and everything he went through.”
—Caleb A.

“It felt nice to take time with a person who is no longer with us. It would be terrible to just forget about them.”
—Jake L.

“It felt like I was creating a connection and the more you look at the photo it reveals more.”
—Carmen L.
