July 2023 Portrait of the Month — Roman Haar

Roman Haar

July’s Portrait of the Month features Roman Haar, created by Jose H. at Wellington High School in Florida. We were drawn to the sensitivity and sweetness of the portrait, which reflects the innocence of Roman who was only 6 when he was forced into hiding to stay alive. Learn more about Roman’s story below and read Jose’s reflections on his experience drawing a portrait of Roman:

How did it feel to spend so much time observing a photograph and then making art based on the photo?
It felt great to do it. I never had done it.

What did you like and dislike about the art experience?
What I most liked about this experience was that all you have to do is to free your hand.

What do you think you will remember about this experience? Why?
I'll remember the face of the boy because I spent so much time looking at him.
